The Veterans Health Administration is the nation’s largest integrated health system, providing comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services in more than 1,400 facilities. It is the largest subdivision of the Veterans Affairs Department, and one of the largest bureaucracies in the federal government. Unfortunately, numerous investigations of the Veterans Health Administration have revealed startling policy issues, including excessive wait times and substandard care. The VA health care system is in need of comprehensive reform to ensure that America’s veterans receive quality and timely health care.
